Best-selling crime writer John Dean will mark 20 years as a published novelist with a discussion about the nature of ideas with fellow crime writer Ian Robinson at a Kirkcudbright hotel in Dumfries and Galloway.
The title of the event is taken from the quote from Robertson Davies, Canadian novelist, playwright, and critic, who when asked where his ideas come from, replied:
‘My usual, perfectly honest reply is, ‘I don’t get them; they get me’
John, whose twenty seventh novel, The Informer, is out in September, will tell Ian how the ideas for his books have come about in an event which will interest writers and readers alike.
John’s latest novel, the thirteenth in the series, is set as usual in the fictional northern England city of Hafton, where a church is in flames, a housing estate is blighted by rioting, hate fills the air, the dead appear to be walking the streets, and a shadowy figure is orchestrating it all – but who? And why?
John said: “The big challenge for authors is to keep the ideas coming. The event will examine the process whereby that happens.”
John and Ian both live in Dumfries and Galloway and are published by the Book Folks, a Joffe Books imprint.
